My Top 25 Most Played Songs

Any excuse to use a photo of St. Vincent. Photo by me.

So in honor of the list I gathered for The Awl (What’s Your Most Played Song?), here’s a run-down of my top 25 most played songs, and the bits I love the most about ‘em:

1. “Good Intentions Paving Company” by Joanna Newsom, 120 plays

All the way to the thing we’ve been playing at, darlin’

I can see that you’re wearing your staying hat, darlin’

For the time being all is well

Won’t you love me a spell?

[song]

2. “My Heart Is A Drummer” by Allo Darlin’, 92

And when you call me, on the telephone

My fingers will still twist through the cord

And I’ll slide my feet up and down the wall

But I know that I’m stronger than you are

[song]

3. “A Chicken with Its Head Cut Off” by the Magnetic Fields, 94

We don’t have to stars exploding in the night

Or electric eels under the covers

We don’t have to be anything quite so unreal

Let’s just be lovers

[song]

4. “Our Way to Fall” by Yo La Tengo, 89

I remember before we met

I remember sitting next to you

And I remember pretending I wasn’t looking

[song]

5. “Bridges and Balloons” by Joanna Newsom, 83

We sailed away on a winter’s day

With fate as malleable as clay

But ships are fallible, I say

And the nautical, like all things, fades

I actually listened to the Decemberists’ version of this long before I knew it was a Newsom song.

[song]

6. “The King of Carrot Flowers, Pt. 1” by Neutral Milk Hotel, 77

And this is the room one afternoon I knew I could love you

And from above you how I sank into your soul

Into that secret place where no one dares to go

[song]

7. “Peach, Plum, Pear” by Joanna Newsom, 76

And I am blue

I am blue and unwell

Made me bolt like a horse

[song]

8. “I Can Change” by LCD Soundsystem, 70

And love is a curse shoved in a hearse

Love is an open book to a verse of your bad poetry

And this is coming from me

[song]

9. “Two-Headed Boy, Pt. 2” by Neutral Milk Hotel, 68

And in my dreams you’re alive and you’re crying

As your mouth moves in mine, soft and sweet

Rings of flowers round your eyes and I love you

For the rest of your life

[song]

10. “Inflammatory Writ” by Joanna Newsom, 65

And what’s it mean when suddenly we’re spent

And tell me true ambition came and reared its head and went far from you

Even mollusks have weddings, though solemn and leaden

But you dirge for the dead, and take no jam on your bread

Just a supper of salt and a waltz through your empty bed

[song]

11. “Quiet Houses” by Fleet Foxes, 64

Don’t give in

[song]

12. “AT&T” by Pavement, 63

Maybe someone’s going to save me

My heart is made of gravy

And the laps I swim

From lunatics don’t count

Open up your stockings

Pull out the things you never wanted

From room service calls

Room service calls

I woke up with that opening line stuck in my head once, so of course I had to listen to it over and over again.

[song]

13. “Abandoned Love” by Bob Dylan, 62

We sat in an empty theater and we kissed

I asked ya please to cross me off your list

My head tells me it’s time to make a change

But my heart is telling me I love ya but you’re strange

[song]

14. “Spit on a Stranger” by Pavement, 62

Honey I’m a prize

And you’re a catch

And we’re a perfect match

[song]

15. “The Good That Won’t Come Out” by Rilo Kiley, 62

All the good that won’t come out of me

And all the stupid lies I hide behind

It’s such a big mistake lying here in your warm embrace

[song]

16. “Car” by Built to Spill, 61

I want specifics on the general idea

I wanna think what I should know

Want you to do me what to show

I wanna see movies of my dreams

[song]

17. “Two-Headed Boy” by Neutral Milk Hotel, 60

And in the dark we will take off our clothes

And they’ll be placing fingers through the notches in your spine

And when all is breaking everything that you could keep inside

[song]

18. “Useful Chamber” by the Dirty Projectors, 58

I’m caught up in a storm

That I don’t need no shelter from

All I want and all I need

Right here with me

You’re right here with me

[song]

19. “Randy Described Eternity” by Built to Spill, 55

Where you gonna be?

Where will you spend eternity?

I’m gonna be perfect from now on

I’m gonna be perfect starting now

[song]

20. “Need You Now” by Cut Copy, 54

Hand touches your body now

Lips touch as you’re falling down

Run for the last train

One of them will get you home

[song]

21. “The Only Moment We Were Alone” by Explosions in the Sky, 52

8:23-10:14

[song]

22. “Cruel” by St. Vincent, 52

You were the one waving flares in the air so they could see you

And they were a zephyr, blowing past ya, blowing fastly so they can see ya

Cruel, cruel, oh

[song]

23. “In the Aeroplane Over the Sea” by Neutral Milk Hotel, 51

Now how I remember you

How I would push my fingers through

Your mouth to make those muscles move

That made your voice so smooth and sweet

Now we keep where we don’t know

All secrets sleep in winter clothes

With one you loved so long ago

Now he don’t even know his name

[song]

24. “Zero” by Yeah Yeah Yeahs, 51

Shake it like a ladder to the sun

Makes me feel like a madman on the run

I listened to this album (explaining this song and the one below) over and over again because it just came out at the time while I was waiting for a friend to pick me up for a party in Cambridge

[song]

25. “Heads Will Roll” by Yeah Yeah Yeahs, 49

Glitter on the west streets

Silver over everything

The river’s all wet

You’re all chrome

[song]
